The Great Fatra National Park is located in the northwestern part of central Slovakia. It extends in the regions of Turiec, Liptov and Banská Bystrica. The highest peak of the park is Ostredok with a height of 1596 m above sea level. It is one of the most extensive protected areas, where the natural diversity has been preserved. The park has protected yew habitats, which is quite rare in Europe. Of the vertebrates found, mention should be made of a wolf, bear and lynx, as well as the golden eagle.
