The Massif of the Low Tatras after the High Tatras is the most important protected area of Slovakia. The central part of the foothills was formed from crystalline rocks - granite, granodiorite, gneiss and filite, under the influence of glacier activity. The diversified geological structure of the Low Tatras also includes large karst areas - the Demänovský cave system (national nature monument) stretches over nine levels and is 24 kilometers long. 90% of the area of the Low Tatras is covered by forests, including deciduous - oak and beech. Among the protected species are edelweiss, several types of saxifrage, Slovak pasque flower. Low Tatras are the only place in Slovakia where we can meet Saxifraga Mutata L and mountain change.
