Shepherd's equipment - a ball, a ball, a kulag, a staff of Lesser Poland

Kategoria: Culture

It was believed that the yew cane cut in a place where the sun never reaches and blessed in the church has a magical power: it facilitates harming (abusing). A splinter cut from such a cane and stuck behind the rim of a cutter or a knuckle made the milk go bad and the cheese wormed. Some canes were decorated. They carved geometric, zoomorphic or apotropeic patterns (e.g., unexpected crosses). Today, shepherds still use this type of walking sticks, they can be seen in huts, in the hands of juhas, but also in the collections of ethnographic museums.
