ROUTE DESCRIPTION:
Day 1
We start our trip in the Low Beskids in Rymanów Zdrój. This health resort can be proud of more than 135 years of its tradition. It is worth visiting the wooden mineral waters drinking room. Its shape resembles the original "Pawilon nad Źródłami" ("Pavilion over the Springs"). We can also see several historic wooden villas in its immediate vicinity. Next, we head north towards Rymanów, and then east by road 889 to reach the village Odrzechowa, located in a picturesque region along the Wisłok River gorge. The place is special because of the Experimental Station of the Institute of Animal Production located here which breeds Hutsul ponies adapted to the harsh mountain conditions. The next stop along our small trail of Vlach culture is 5 km away from the village Wola Sękowa with a unique, on the Polish scale, Folk University of Artistic Crafts, whose activity refers to the tradition of inter-war folk schools by conducting, among others, certified courses in artistic handicrafts. It is time to continue the trip east to Bukowsko and turn there to the south towards the picturesque village Wisłok Wielki. The first records about the village founded under the Vlach law date back to 1361. It is one of the places where, thanks to the activity of local community, the traces of Vlach culture are still vivid. We can find here, among others, St. Onuphrius wooden Orthodox church in the style characteristic of religious buildings built in the nineteenth century. The points of interest in the village also include the agritourism farm "Chata nad Wisłokiem" in an authentic, renovated Lemko hut from the early twentieth century. In agritourism farms Przedbieszczady and Mermerówka, we can buy goat cheeses. Next, we head west, crossing the former border between Hungary and Galicia to reach the last point of today's trip - Daliowa. In order to better feel the atmosphere of old cultures, we stay in the agritourism farm "Zakucie" or "Dzikie Wino". The first one offers, for instance, evenings of Lemko songs, while the other is housed in a renovated Lemko hut and actively promotes the local cultural heritage.
Day 2
We go a little bit back to Jaśliska to go south along the river Bielcza. Here, we are entering Jaśliska Landscape Park, which protects the nature in areas depopulated after the displacement of Lemko population right after World War II. On the way, we pass by abandoned settlements of Lipowiec and Czeremcha. The villages founded under the Vlach law, once populous, are now examples of abandoned places where you can see only a few traces of the former inhabitants: the old Orthodox church site, several tombstones in the old cemetery and ruins of the guard. Further on, the trail leads north to the heart of the Low Beskids, the village Zyndranowa. The place is a must for people who want to get to know the Lemko culture, and this is due to the Museum of Lemko Culture located here since 1968. The museum was founded by an active Lemko culture animator, a native resident of the village of Lemko origin, Fedor Gocz. In this village, Lemko traditions are vivid: the Lemko language is retained. As in the days of the Second Polish Republic, four different religions co-exist there: Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Greek Catholic and Jehovah's Witnesses. Leaving Zyndranowa, we head further north, passing by Mszana, where we can find the family organic farm "Figa", most renown in Poland, famous for its great organic goat cheeses (including Vlach cheeses).
At the crossroads just after passing Mszana, we turn left to reach the village of Olchowiec. It is a small village founded in the first half of the sixteenth century under the Vlach law. Although only about 60 residents live here, it is now a very important site for the preservation of Lemko traditions. Since 1990, the village has held the so-called Lemko Orthodox church indulgences, that is meetings of Polish and foreign Lemkos on the occasion of the indulgence of St. Nicholas (always on the Sunday closest to 22nd May). What is more, a few traditional Lemko lodges survived in the village. The Lemko house in Olchowiec is open to visitors from April to November at any time of the day. Day 2 ends with heading north to the village Chyrowa, picturesquely situated in the valley of the creek Iwielka, at the foot of Hyrowa and Dania.
Day 3
Before we continue our trip, we are going to visit here the Care of the Mother of God Orthodox Church. Its foundation dates back to 1780 or even earlier. When leaving Chyrowa, we head north to the village of Iwla to turn right towards Dukla, then along the Hungarian Tract, to the south, along the river Jasiołka. The name of the Hungarian route refers to the privilege of King Sigismund III Vasa of 1588, when he allowed the sale and storage of Hungarian wines and the establishment of customs house in 1595. On the way, we will pass by some places associated with the cult of St. John of Dukla, whose hermitage was situated in this area. In Trzciana, we turn left and cross the river Jasiołka to go to the picturesque village Zawadka Rymanowska. Apart from the wooden Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church from 1855, we can find here a lot of remains of the Lemko presence in the form of traditional Lemko pens, huts and chapels. After leaving Zawadka Rymanowska, we head north-east to the town of Lubatowa, where we turn right towards Rymanów Zdrój. However, before we go back to the starting point of our trip, we stray from our route for a moment to go the village Bałucianka. Here we can find the old Lemko Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God Orthodox Church belonging to the Wooden Architecture Trail.
