ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

Day 1

At the beginning of the stay in the Low Beskids it is worth to visit Dukla. The Historical Museum located in a historic 18th-century palace is an attractive place to visit. Then we go to see the waterfall on the Iwielka stream. It is located in the village of Iwla. After a short rest we head to Chyrowa, where it is worth to visit the Orthodox Church of the Mother of God Care (currently the Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary). From the Orthodox church, a stunning view of Chyrowa, the mountain on the slopes of which sheep are grazed in the summer, unfolds. You might want to visit the shepherd's hut and taste the cheese products, which are made on the spot and in the traditional way. We finish this day in Olchowiec – a village founded under the Vlach law in the first half of the 16th century. The name of the village comes from the alder (PL. Olcha) - a tree which is called wilcha in Ukrainian. This tiny village lost in the mountains is delightfully picturesque. Its natural values are complemented by architectural monuments from the Lemko culture, i.a. the Greek Catholic Orthodox Church of the Transfer of St. Nicholas' relics from Myra to Bari, which can be reached by a magnificent stone bridge. In one of the old Lemko huts in Olchowiec, there is a private Lemko Museum which includes a west Lemko thatched hut and a wooden granary. After visiting the museum, we find accommodation in one of the nearby villages.

Day 2

The next day we go to a small Lemko village called Zyndranowa, where the Museum of Lemko Culture is located. After seeing the collections in the museum, we take the "W przełomie Jasiołki" nature path which starts by the campsite. The nature path leads through the "Przełom Jasiołki" nature reserve, which was created in 1976 along the canyon section of the Jasiołka river. After a 2-hour walk we go to Daliowa, where the St. Paraskeva Orthodox Church is located. Near the Orthodox church, there is a cemetery with several old tombstones, the oldest of which is from 1882. Daliowa is one of the oldest settlements in the area. This village was founded under the German law, but around 1560 the bishop of Przemyśl refounded the village under the Vlach law.

Day 3

The next stop on our journey is Jaśliska - a former defensive border town. The oldest Upper Lusatian houses from approximately the mid-nineteenth century preserved in the south-western frontage of the Market Square. 16th century wine cellars survived to this day under some of the buildings on the Market Square. Posada Jaśliska is a village that lies at the foot of the slope on which the village of Jaśliska is located, at the mouth of the Bełcza stream to the Jasiołka river. During the times when Jaśliska existed as a town, Posada was treated as the suburbs of Jaśliska. The Polish population dominated here. The inhabitants were mostly Polish, Ruthenian and Jewish. In the years 1945-1947, some Lemko families voluntarily left for Ukraine and some were forcibly displaced. A brick shrine survived by the old roadside. A pre-war tavern, several old houses and the ruins of a sawmill also survived. The next destination that day is Wisłok Wielki, the history of which dates back to the 14th century. Ludna, a village consisting of several parts and divided into two separate parishes, was largely destroyed during the battles with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and during the Operation Vistula. Even though the native inhabitants were displaced at that time, Wisłok preserved the unique atmosphere and has a life of its own. Its heart is still the surviving wooden Greek Catholic Church of St. Onuphrius. We finish our journey in Komańcza. On the sidelines of the village is the Monastery of Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, which is where Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński was interned. The former Greek Catholic Orthodox Church of the Mother of God Care built in 1802 is also located here. The church, along with the belfry, was one of the three surviving examples of east Lemko (the so-called Osława style) sacral architecture (next to Turzańsk and Rzepedź). In September 2006, the church burned to the ground along with the equipment; in 2010 it was completely rebuilt.

DESCRIPTION OF OBJECTS:

HISTORICAL MUSEUM – based in a late baroque palace and park complex of Mniszech's family from the second half of the 18th century, designed in the entre cour et jardin based on older buildings. The facility represents the rich history and splendour of the city. It was seriously damaged during World War II and shortly after it ended but the creation of the museum allowed its reconstruction. The museum displays permanent and temporary exhibitions.

WATERFALL ON THE WIELKA STREAM - it is located in the village of Iwla and is the most famous waterfall in the Low Beskids. In 2002, it was recognised as a natural monument. Before World War II the construction of a water mill by the waterfall was started but the outbreak of war thwarted the plans of its completion and in 1944, during the bloody battles which were later called the Battle of the Dukla Pass or the Dukla-Prešov Offensive, it was razed to the ground. To this day we can see the ruins of the orographic right bank of the Iwielka stream.

ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE MOTHER OF GOD CARE IN CHYROWA - former Lemko Greek Catholic Orthodox church built in 18th century. Currently it is the Roman Catholic Filial Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The building was listed as a monument in 1985 and included in the Wooden Architecture Trail of Podkarpacie. The Orthodox church is a tripartite and oriented structure. Closed semicircular chancel and adjacent stone sacristy on the north, wooden nave and women's gallery, with a log frame structure. Tower with a wooden frame structure. Between the nave and the chancel there is a rococo iconostasis which was thoroughly renovated in the early 1990s. Behind the Baroque altar from the 18th century there is a wonderful image of the Mother of God with the Child.

GREEK CATHOLIC CHURCH OF THE TRANSFER OF ST. NICHOLAS' RELICS FROM MYRA TO BARI IN OLCHOWIEC - built in 1934. The Orthodox church has a tripartite structure, separate chancel, nave and women's gallery. It has a log frame structure and, according to tradition, it is oriented. The church has a ridge board roof reinforced with metal and crowned with two domes. The windows in the Orthodox church are stained glass. It is surrounded by a stone wall. The church can be reached by a stone bridge which is unique in Lemkivshchyna and is considered a monument.

The LEMKO MUSEUM IN OLCHOWIEC is located in the Kolonia hamlet and managed by Tadeusz Kiełbasiński from Łódź, who was fascinated with Lemkivshchyna and bought an old Lemko hut in 1981; after some time, he arranged a museum there. Currently, the museum includes a wooden hut with a log frame structure (west Lemko type) and a roof covered with straw thatch, which consists of living quarters and utility rooms just like in a typical Lemko hut. Apart from the main building, there is a wooden granary with a log frame structure and extended thatched gable roof. The entire property is fenced with wooden poles hanging on wooden pillars covered with gable roofs. You can visit the museum from April to November at any time of the day. Entrance free of charge! Larger groups are kindly requested to inform the museum about the date on which they would like to visit it.

MUSEUM OF LEMKO CULTURE IN ZYNDRANOWA - founded in 1968 owing to the efforts of an indigenous inhabitant of Zyndranowa, Teodor Gocz. The hut dating from 1860 is the main site of the open-air museum. The interior of the hut is a reconstruction of the rural scribe office with archives, books, letters and photographs from the area of Lemkivshchyna. In the so-called chamber, sacral exhibits were collected, such as pieces of cast iron crosses, vestments, copies of icons. There also is a rich collection of Easter eggs decorated with the traditional Lemko patterns. Among farm tools and objects, you can see flails, looms, millstones. The Museum has also collected war memorabilia after the operations on the Dukla Pass.

"W PRZEŁOMIE JASIOŁKI" NATURE PATH

The nature path leads through the "Przełom Jasiołki" nature reserve, which was created in 1976 along the canyon section of the Jasiołka river.  At the beginning of the path, there is the "Stasiane" campsite belonging to the Dukla Forest Division, with a fireplace next to it. There are 7 stops with information boards on the path.  It makes a loop. There are handrails and reinforcements where necessary. The path is marked with a white and green circle.

The ST. PARASKEVA ORTHODOX CHURCH IN DALIOWA was built in 1933 in the place where the previous church, which had burned down two years earlier, was standing. It is a wooden church with a log frame structure, built in the Ukrainian national style based on the shape of a cross, with a large dome over the nave. The side parts are topped with a gable roof covered with sheet metal. The walls are boarded with vertical planks. The interior is almost empty and the walls are covered with wood panelling. The previous iconostasis was consumed by a fire and due to the lack of money, no new iconostasis was built before the war broke out.

The GREEK CATHOLIC ORTHODOX CHURCH OF ST. ONUPHRIUS IN WISŁOK WIELKI was built in the years 1850-1853.  It was renovated several times; since 2002, there is a mini museum of Orthodox church art in the tower and the attic of the church. It is a wooden building with a log frame structure on a stone foundation, with an apparently dual and oriented structure. The interior is covered with a 19th century polychrome. A complete three-sided iconostasis survived in the church. Today, the icons which were originally placed in the iconostasis are hanging on the walls of the church. A free-standing brick belfry–gate is at the same time the entrance gate to the church. A two-storey building with a tented roof and a dome similar to those crowning the Orthodox church, built on a square plan.

GREEK CATHOLIC PARISH ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE MOTHER OF GOD'S CARE IN KOMAŃCZA was rebuilt in 2010 after it had burnt to the ground in 2006. It was an entirely wooden building from 1802. The church was consecrated in 1805. Next to it there is a belfry from 1834 with a wooden frame structure, topped with a "dome", and several preserved tombstones of the former Orthodox church cemetery.
