Deep piety and the rough nature of highlanders have existed side by side for many centuries, inspiring artists fascinated by the Podhale region. One of them was Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer, a poet and novelist born in Ludźmierz, who dedicated the uniqueness of the mountain world to a collection of stories entitled "In the Rocky Podhale". They were described in the Podhale dialect, which - in almost unchanged form - can still be heard today.

Ludźmierz, the writer's hometown, is one of the most important places near the Tatra Mountains. Every year, not only highlanders and pilgrims from all over Poland come here, but also Polish diaspora. It is in the Ludźmierz church that there is a wonderful figure of the Mother of God with the Child, called Gaździna Podhala, who since the 15th century watches over the inhabitants of the Podhale settlements.

The Ludźmierz parish is famous for the unusually lofty Bacowski holiday, associated with the beginning of grazing. It takes place around St. Wojciech (April 23) and is a blessing of sheep, which then go out in a solemn reykjaví hall. During the Holy Mass, water and wood chips are also blessed, which the shepherds take with them to light the wool - a bonfire in the shepherd's hut.

The arrival of Wołochów had a significant impact on the development of the region. Shepherds brought with them not only the skill of grazing sheep in difficult mountain conditions, but also many elements of contemporary Podhale culture - from names (e.g. Bargiel, Galas, Rogala), through outfit elements (e.g. Baców belts, pants) and furnishing of shepherds' huts (including barracks, ferula, warzecha), to magical rituals, which for many centuries coexisted together with Catholicism.

The car route runs through the most important Podhale towns:

Ludźmierz - the oldest village in Podhale. The poet Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer, the glorifier of Podhale and highlander culture, was born here. In the House of the Union of Podhale thematic exhibition entitled "In the circle of live (shepherd's) watra", whose leitmotif is fire burning in a shepherd's hut. Szaflary - the name of the place is associated with the period of German colonization. It probably comes from the words: "Schafler" - cooper, "Schafflare" - shepherds or distortions of the word "Schaffner" - steward, administrator. Zakopane - from the end of the 19th century a cultural center visited (or inhabited) by famous figures fascinated by the Podhale region. The following were associated with Zakopane: Władysław Orkan, Stanisław Witkiewicz, Jan Kasprowicz, Karol Szymanowski, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz and others. Dzianisz - the name of the village probably comes from the Wallachian word combination 'dzea-nysz' (river in the valley). From the Ostrysz mountain, there is a wonderful view of the Tatra Mountains, Czarny Dunajec, Nowotarska Basin and Slovakia. Chochołów - a village built almost entirely from original highlander's cottages. It is a local tradition to wash them from the outside with soap and water twice a year, for Easter and Corpus Christi. Czarny Dunajec - an important element of architecture were the so-called Czarnodunajecki manor houses, i.e. stone one-story houses with a porch supported by pillars, currently few. You can still see many historic wooden houses in traditional construction.
