ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

Day 1

We start the journey in Sanok and its main tourist point – the Museum of Folk Architecture, the first and the largest open-air ethnographic museum in Poland.  After visiting the museum, we go to Uherce Mineralne, where practical skills test is waiting for us in the Bieszczady Crafts School. That is a place where we can learn one of the crafts which are forgotten in the contemporary world, such as making clay pots, calligraphy or “proziak” soda bread baking with the use of bread oven. On our way to the next stop - Ustrzyki Dolne, we come across as many as 7 sacred objects belonging to the Wooden Architecture Trail - Greek Catholic Saint Paraskeva Orthodox Church. In Ustrzyki Dolne, we can visit the Milling and Countryside Museum. It is the only museum in Poland where you can see complete equipment of line once used for cleaning and grinding grain. It is good to know that the facility serves authentic regional dishes of the Lemko and Boyko cuisine, such as sour Carpathian soup called "kysełycia", groats and meat chops called "hryczanyki", “proziak” soda bread or oat and cottage cheese noodles called "klepak" - a dish the origins of which date back to the 16th century.  When going further to the south along so-called Wielka Pętla Bieszczadzka (the Great Loop of Bieszczady) towards Ustrzyki Górne, we pass a few wooden Orthodox churches in Hoszów, Rabe, Żłobek, Czarna and Smolnik. A particularly noteworthy object is a UNESCO World Heritage Site - St. Michael Archangel's Church in Smolnik. From that point we drive south along the Wołosatka river to Ustrzyki Górne.

Day 2

After a day of sightseeing and museums it is a time for a mountain hike. So we go north to the village of Bereżki (we can use one of the local buses).

  • First, we follow the yellow trail (Bereżki > Przysłup Caryński) towards Przysłup Caryński, a picturesque mountain pass between the ridge of Caryńska Pasture and slopes of Magura Stuposiańska. At the end of that section we come across the new building of "Koliba" - a mountain hostel established by the Warsaw University of Technology. The shape of the building refers to the pre-war Carpathian mountain hostels and the regional architecture.
  • From that point we go further along the historical and nature path "Przysłup Caryński - Krywe nad Sanem" (marked in red), then we follow the path to the ancient village (marked in yellow). We reach our destination point, namely the picturesque valley located in the former village of Caryńskie, in less than 30 minutes. The name comes probably from the Romanian word "carina" which means a cultivated land, a pasture. Interestingly, the name of the popular Caryńska Pasture derives from the name of the village. The place is, however, important for us due to a different aspect. Since 2016 Bacówka Caryńskie has been operating here - a facility which restores the pastoral traditions. We can find here a wide range of Vlach cheeses: smoked and natural, wurda, bundz, gołka (Polish-style mountain cheese), sirene and ewes’ milk cheese. One should spend some time to have a look around and find some remains of the former village. Along the Caryński and Balotecz streams you can come across e.g. remnants of an Orthodox church, foundations of buildings or wild orchards.
  • We return to Przysłup Caryński and follow the green trail to Połonina Caryńska. Hike time is about 2 ½ h.
  • In the end we follow the red trail to come back from Połoninca Caryńska to Ustrzyki Górne. The last section takes around 1.5 h.

Day 3

Leaving Ustrzyki Górne we follow Wielka Pętla Bieszczadzka in the direction of Cisna and then in the direction of Komańcza which greets us with the Low Beskids. After entering the village of Osławica, we can easily see the signs of activities associated with pasturing: mountain shelters, shelters for shepherds and agritourism farms offering high-quality sheep milk cheeses. In summer, the local meadows are full of flocks of grazing sheep. To discover the heritage of Vlach culture in the best way possible, we visit the villages of Wisłok Wielki, Daliowa and Zyndranowa. In Wisłok Wielki we can find everything that is related to the Vlach culture: a wooden Orthodox church, old Lemko huts and great cheese products. Out of two former Orthodox churches, only one survived - Saint Onuphrius church built in the years 1850-1853. The Lemko landscape is completed by the products of local cheesemakers from the farm called "Przedbieszczady" who offer a selection of traditional goat cheeses.  A visit to Wisłok Wielki should not take us much time, so we move on - to the village of Daliowa, probably one of the oldest villages in the surroundings. We can find a historic wooden Saint Paraskeva Orthodox church here which was built in 1933 in the so-called Ukrainian national style, unusual for Lemkivshchyna. Then we go to the "Zakucie" farm where you can take part in handicraft workshops. We have several options to choose from, e.g. making traditional Carpathian jewellery called "krywulka" or painting Easter eggs in Lemko style. Then we follow road 897, turn left in the direction of Barwinek and get to Zyndranowa, a very special place for contemporary Lemkivshchyna due to the established here the museum in 1968. After the visit we return to Daliowa and head north to the last point - Rymanów Zdrój. This is one of the most popular Sub-Carpathian health-resorts where you can easily recover after the three-day journey.

Culinary Trail of Sub-Carpathian Flavours (PL. Szlak Kulinarny Podkarpackie Smaki) - the trail includes 50 facilities, and therefore, it can be considered the largest culinary trail in Poland. Its aim is to promote tourism in the region using its rich culinary traditions and to get to know the Podkarpackie Province through eating experience. In eating places, you can order typical dishes of Lemko and Boyko cuisine such as oat and meat chops called "hreczanyki", sauerkraut cakes known as "fuczki", oat and cottage cheese noodles called "klepak" or Zalewajka - potato soup with rye flour, cream and garlic, as well as other traditional dishes of Sub-Carpathian cuisine.

Museum of Folk Culture in Sanok - the first and largest open-air etnographic museum in Poland. The individual ethnographic groups (Boykos, Lemkos, Polish Uplanders and valley inhabitants called "Dolinianie") have separate exhibition sectors which are perfectly adapted to the physiography of the area. The premises of the museum include over 100 wooden buildings dating from the seventeenth to the twentieth century where, in addition to residential, residential and commercial and farm buildings, one can see also religious buildings, village school, inn and industrial facilities like a water mill, windmills, blacksmith’s shop, and the Galician Market.

Royal Castle Museum in Sanok - one of the most popular museums in the region. Currently, it collects more than 20,000 exhibits. It is divided into individual sections: archaeological, iconographic, historical, and conservation sections. As part of the Museum, the Gallery of Modern Art of Maria and Franciszek Prochaska and the Gallery of Zdzisław Beksiński were created. A special place in the collection of the museum in Sanok is dedicated to a collection of Orthodox church art with more than 1,200 exhibits illustrating the evolution of the art of the Eastern Churches.

CARYŃSKA PASTURE (1297 m a.s.l.) - one of the pastures in the Bieszczady Mountains, a massif located between the Prowcza and Wołosaty valleys, where Brzegi Górne and Ustrzyki Górne are located. The name of the pasture derives from the no longer existing village of Caryńskie, which lay at the foot of the pasture. However, the grazing lands on the pasture also belonged to the villages of Berehy Górne, Bereżki and Ustrzyki Górne. Even in the inter-war period cattle grazing was very intensive here. The Caryńska pasture is under the protection of the Bieszczady National Park.

MUSEUM OF LEMKO CULTURE IN ZYNDRANOWA - founded in 1968 owing to the efforts of an indigenous inhabitant of Zyndranowa, Teodor Gocz. The hut dating from 1860 is the main site of the open-air museum. The interior of the hut is a reconstruction of the rural scribe office with archives, books, letters and photographs from the area of Lemkivshchyna. In the so-called chamber, sacral exhibits were collected, such as pieces of cast iron crosses, vestments, copies of icons. There also is a rich collection of Easter eggs decorated with the traditional Lemko patterns. Among farm tools and objects, you can see flails, looms, millstones. The Museum has also collected war memorabilia after the operations on the Dukla Pass.

Rymanów Zdrój health resort - a resort village located on the border of the Low Beskids and Bukowskie Foothills. The health resort was founded in 1876 after the discovery of natural sources of healing waters here. It is a resort with a unique climate compared to the rest of the country, combining both the characteristics of mountain climate, and - thanks to the high content of iodine - the characteristics of marine climate. The therapeutic profile of the resort is based on the values of the local climate and also on the use of peloid and healing waters.
