For many centuries pastoralism grew into the lives of the inhabitants of Podhale. Its greatest flourishing on the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains took place after World War II - according to estimates, even about 30,000 sheep were grazing in the halls at that time. It was not indifferent to the Tatra nature. Hardly reversible changes affected primarily the forest floor and mountain pine, where - to widen grazing areas - coniferous trees and shrubs were burned and cut. Only after the creation of the Tatra National Park in 1955 began to slowly reduce the number of sheep grazing until their complete elimination. Unused glades gradually began to overgrow - with time it turned out that this process has a huge impact on changes in the natural environment.

Sheep returned to the Tatra halls and glades only after 1981 as a so-called cultural sheep grazing. Today it is a form of protection of the mountain landscape as well as a unique way of transmitting and consolidating pastoral traditions so important for this region. During cultural grazing, everything takes place as it used to be - pastoral customs and rituals are preserved, shepherds use highlander dialect and wear traditional highlander costumes. Only sheep of the local mountain breed are grazed on Tatra glades, and they are guarded by dogs from the Tatra Sheepdog.

Products made from sheep's milk include bundz, bryndza and salty smoked oscypek cheese known all over Poland. By-product - a type of whey - a by-product that can also be tasted in a traditional shepherd's hut. The recipe for making sheep's cheese has remained unchanged for centuries.

Cultural grazing of sheep in the Tatra National Park is currently carried out on 30 glades.

Route:

The walking route leads through two very attractive Tatra valleys - Kościeliska Valley and Chochołowska Valley. The Tatra National Park conducts cultural sheep grazing in the clearings located in their area, thanks to which you can closely see the traditional work of shepherds.

The journey begins in Kiry, whose name comes from the bustling definition of a road, path or river bend: "kira" or "kiera". From here, follow the green trail deep into the Kościeliska Valley to reach, after about 0:25 hours, the Higher Kira Miętusej - a flat, large clearing, surrounded by a low-fir spruce forest. Here we turn onto the black trail, the so-called "Path over the rubles" that leads up to the Chochołowska Valley.

After approx. 0:40 h march, the Niżnia Chimney Sweep, where you can meet one of the rare plant species in the Carpathians - fold a small, placed on the Red list of Polish plants and fungi in the group of species endangered.

We continue along the black trail until we meet another green trail in the area of the Dudowa Valley. From here, after approx. 1:00 h walking, we reach the Chochołowska Glade - the largest glade in the Polish Tatras and one of the largest in the entire Tatras. Polana is famous for from massively blooming crocuses at the beginning of spring, attracting the attention of many tourists. Near the PTTK shelter.
